A Legend of Zelda RPG
Mounts and Vehicles
Mounts:
Mounts are simple to understand. They can be used in any open air environment in a confrontation. They cannot however be used in a temple or dungeon. Mounts enable players to move their characters around further and without loss to their energy. In some cases you may be able to win or buy a mount, but there is also the possibility of taming a wild mount. In order to do so, you must roll a wisdom roll against the mount’s power roll and be successful. Here is a list of available mounts. Every one of these creatures is mountable in some fashion in the Zelda series. It should be noted that a mounts health is tied to your health. If you lose all your hearts, even if you are resuscitated in game, your mount will die, and you will have to get a new one if you wish to have one again.
Horses can move 14 spaces without loss to energy. Players can spend energy to horses to get them to move a total of 20 spaces.
Deer can move 12 spaces.
Bears can move 12 spaces, and when attacking from a Bear, a second attack can be performed.
Loftwings can be used to fly 14 spaces. Due to their
ability to fly, only range attacks can be used
when riding them. Likewise they can also only
be hit by range attacks. This is of course
does not apply when fighting other
flying enemies.
Bulbos can move 10 spaces, and when attacking
from a bulbos, all enemies become “shieldless”
to that character.
Dodongos can move 10 spaces, and when attacking
from a dodongo, perform a secondary wisdom
roll against the enemy’s shield to add additional fire
element effects.
Sand Seals can move 8 spaces in regular terrain, but in sandy terrain they can move 16 spaces.
Vehicles:
Vehicles function a little differently than regular ones. While various mounts in Hyrule may need to be tamed before being able to be ridden, vehicles need special care and attention to operate. This means that in order to do a grid movement, you must perform a wisdom check against the vehicle's drive stat. If you roll successfully, you may perform a grid movement and the vehicle will drive. if your roll is not successful, your character may proceed at normal walking speeds, but with no option to sprint. While not every vehicle here is drivable in zelda, some are included to add variety.
Balloons float high above enemies, and over players a
shield bonus of +3. They can move 10 squares per turn.
Remember, since you are flying only range attacks can be
used by you or against you unless facing a flying enemy.
one more thing, the wisdom roll does not apply to a
character elevating the balloon, it only applies to moving
across the grid. These vehicles can also be armed with a
bomb canon with a range of 20 squares. To operate
wisdom rolls must be 8 or over.
Wooden tanks are vehicles typically piloted by monsters,
such as Miniblins. Once the tank is disabled and its driver
is killed however, players may choose to drive them. These
vehicles are small, but offer +4 armour, and +3 shield and
a bomb cannon to fire for attack (range 20 squares).
These move at 12 squares per turn. Driver wisdom rolls
must beat 8 to move. regular character attacks are not
possible while driving
Guardians are machines that are autonomous. However
a broken one can be refitted by a character to operate
like a vehicle. These walking robot vehicles are fitted
with laser canons that act the same as bomb cannons
(range 20 squares). They also provide the player with
+5 armor and +4 shield. Guardians move at 10 squares
per turn. Driver wisdom rolls must beat 10 to move.
Regular character attacks are not possible while driving
Master cycles: These mechanical bikes operate similar
to horses. They can maneuver at a speed of 20 squares
per turn, and can be used to do +2 attack due to the
speed. The Driver must beat a 6 with wisdom rolls to
operate. All weapon styles are available to this vehicle.
Spirit Trains: Spirit Trains are strange things. They drive about on ethereal tracks that seem to go wherever the character deems worthy. They provide the player with +4 armour and +3 shield, and can move 15 squares per turn. Bomb cannons can also be mounted onto spirit trains (range 20 squares). Drivers must roll a 10 to maneuver spirit trains. Just a few more things: trains must move 3 squares in one direction before they can turn. Also, if this vehicle is being used, regular character attacks are limited to range attacks.
